EAA Aptify ISD and TW

August 14, 2009

EAA in Oshkosh, a big club, looked for a technical writer with my qualifications. I interviewed on Monday and started work on Tuesday. My job lasted 6 months and 3 days, a truly fulfilling experience! How to top it? I don't know.... I learned the Aptify software, rewrote the manuals according to usability and accessibility standards, and edited the documents so that they all had the same look and feel. I added screencaptures using MWSnap, used Adobe Acrobat, used MS Office 2007. Documents were electronic, but were to be paper-based for the customer. I worked with SMEs and trainers to ensure I had all business rules covered and addressed. For the Point of Sale folks, I generated a paper-based job aid because not all staff could be trained for go live. I found out that the job aid was a good fit. I began the job as a Technical Writer under a business analyst, and segued to Instructional Designer under the Director of IT.

School Specialty Oracle IIii UPK and Tutor Author TW for training

August 13, 2009

School Specialty provided me the opportunity to learn Oracle.  Since I was familiar with SAP, Oracle is a step over.  I learned the simulation program UPK and Tutor Author, the Word processing program template.  I loved both programs and hope to use them in future.  I worked with the Collections team in Ohio to finalize documentation for training.

Famous Footwear Plant closing Finance and Accounting, Marketing

August 12, 2009

Famous Footwear was packing up and leaving for St. Louis, MO, and didn't have any processes documented.  Writing Assistance, Inc. contacted me to help the team with documenting these processes, and I worked off site for 2 months.  I helped, using MS Word, the Finance and Marketing Departments to have trainable and usable documentation, ensured these documents were  placed in the designated IT folder for access by staff.  I used the employees as SMEs, and sat with each person to enable sanity checks, grammar and syntax, spelling, and editing.  Each person signed off on documents that I returned to him/her.  I enjoyed the upbeat atmosphere, and it was the first time I'd worked with Finance folks.

Community Blood Center single contributor

August 11, 2009

When I arrived at CBC, I became the single contributor for training.  I did graphics, multimedia, training documentation, train the trainer, editing, and acted as SME for anyone else who trained in the company.  I had a monthly column in the company rag, and audited all records for the Lab staff to ensure that training met or exceeded the qualifications for each individual lab position.  I oriented new staff, produced new training, learned the specifics of documenting for the FDA and other regulatory agencies.  I ensured that everything was usable and accessible.  I also helped with document control, and used a Learning Management System called QPulse.

Baylor Health Care create document and train trainers, advise graphics guys

August 10, 2009

After some piddly jobs that didn't work out, and didn't involve writing/training, I found Pinnacle Staffing and Baylor Health Care.  I learned a new software program that was being adapted, wrote the user guide for the superusers who would train folks on Internet Portal, and then advised graphics guys on usability and training issues.  I also edited their content, and piloted the website.  I taught the trainers for the portal, and acted as S.M.E. on software questions because there were no written specs.

Bombardier Aerospace and the walk around checklist video

August 9, 2009

Bombardier Aerospace offered me the chance to be an independent contractor (1099), and a terrific salary.  I learned about the glass cockpit, and more about avionics.  We experimented with templates and other ways of developing courseware.  I felt more confident with working in templates.  One thing that I accomplished was a script to a walk-around when the pilot uses the preflight checklist.  My walk-around was made into a video.  The job lasted 8 months.

Marconi: train the trainer, Research and Development, ToolBook II Instructor Telecom

August 7, 2009

Life was truly good with this job.  I learned ToolBook II Instructor in the classroom in Chicago, then enjoyed creating cd-rom and web-based courseware!  I trained the trainers on changes in the software and hardware.  I worked with a variety of people in Research and Development.  I piloted my results, and made changes.  However, telecom was taking a huge economic hit after 9/11, so I found employment elsewhere.
